The ice rink gets a roof again
The ice rink of Forno di Zoldo in the district of Soccampo is being roofed again. Since early October 2026 the large roof trusses have been going up over the ice, to be followed by the metal roofing. Because the new roof is not insulated, the work is quick: mayor Camillo De Pellegrin is aiming to reopen between mid and late November 2026. For the first time in many years, people will play and skate under a roof again in Soccampo.
The roof alone costs about 3 million euros, paid partly by the Veneto region and the rest by the municipality of Val di Zoldo. The whole project is worth more than 4 million euros and also includes new lighting, stands and facilities.
As of November 2026. The exact opening date will be announced by the municipality and the club.
Why the rink was open to the sky for so long
The rink used to have a roof. Around 2009, after heavy snowfall, it had to be removed for fear that it would collapse under the weight of the snow. It was a hard blow for the valley, especially given its successful past. Since then the club has trained and played on an open-air rink, at the mercy of weather and temperatures.
USG Zoldo
The Unione Sportiva Ghiaccio Zoldo, USG Zoldo for short, was founded in Forno di Zoldo in 1972. For a valley of this size, that is a remarkable ice hockey tradition.
The golden years: the 1990s
The 1990s were Zoldo’s most successful decade. In the 1991/92 season the team played in Serie A, Italy’s top league, and took part in the international Alpenliga the same year (1991/92 season). In the 1996/97 season Zoldo was back in Serie A a second time. After that Zoldo was among the leading teams of the second tier for years. In 1997/98 and 1998/99 the team reached the play-off final twice in a row, both times against Auronzo from neighbouring Cadore, and lost both. In the 1999/2000 season Zoldo played in Serie A for a third time.
In the top league the small mountain valley was a clear underdog: in 1999/2000 Zoldo won only two of 28 games. That a valley of a few thousand people made it that far is still a source of pride in Zoldo.
A fresh start and women’s hockey
After the golden years things got harder. In 2004 the club withdrew from Serie B because necessary work on the rink had not been done, and later came the loss of the roof. In 2007/08 Zoldo won the inter-regional Serie C, and from 2008 a new club management rebuilt the team. Since the 2023/24 season a women’s team has played in Italy’s top women’s league, and in 2024 it even reached the final of the Italian championship.
With the new roof a new chapter begins: hockey, youth training and public skating, whatever the weather. The building work has been covered by Il Gazzettino and Corriere delle Alpi; fixtures and news are on the club site zoldoghiaccio.it.
Fixtures, skating times and prices are published by the club at zoldoghiaccio.it.
