About me

Ciao, I'm David

Born in Trier, at home in Trier, and with my heart always in the Zoldo valley too.

How it all began

When the Pelmo first comes into view on the drive up the valley, I know I'm home. And when I'm back in Trier, I feel exactly the same.

I was born in Trier, Germany. When I was six, my mother wanted to go back to the valley her parents came from. We lived in Dozza, I went to primary school in Pieve for five years and to the Scuola Media in Forno for one year. Then it was back to Trier, where I still live today. That is how I came to have two mother tongues and two homes, and I wouldn't want to miss either.

When I think of my childhood in the valley, I think first of the ice stadium in Soccampo. Ice hockey training was hard, sometimes really hard, but I always went home feeling good. In my free time I was there too, skating. I can't tell you how happy I am that the stadium is finally getting a roof again.

Ice runs in the family, just a different kind. In 1937 my grandparents Giuseppe and Maddalena Calchera opened the Eiscafé Calchera in Trier, like so many Zoldo families who went north as ice cream makers. I worked there for many years. So there was always a piece of Zoldo right in the middle of Trier.

I have gone back to the valley again and again, and every time it is the same feeling. I love the nature, the people and a culture that is still very much alive here. I work in IT, and one day I had the idea of bringing my two passions together. That is how zoldo.de began.

Here I write about the valley the way I know it: not like a brochure, but like someone who lived here and keeps coming back.
