Val di Zoldo climbs north-west from the Piave valley near Longarone up to the Staulanza and Duran passes. It was carved by the Maè stream. The lower part is called Zoldo Basso, the upper part Zoldo Alto, and each has its own character.

Forno di Zoldo

The old main town and the centre of the valley’s iron history. Here you find the Museum of Iron and Nails in the Palazzo del Capitaniato, shops, bars and most of the valley’s services. In June the runners of the Dolomiti Extreme Trail start here, and in the district of Soccampo stands the ice rink of the USG Zoldo hockey club.

Dont and Pieve

Dont had one of the last large smelting furnaces. Pieve di Zoldo has the oldest church in the valley, San Floriano, with an altar by Andrea Brustolon and its striking bell tower. More on the culture page. In the former primary school of Pieve, a nature exhibition shows the animals of the valley.

Dozza

The village in the middle of the valley, close to Pieve, where the lower and upper valley meet. From Dozza you are quickly in Forno and just as quickly up in Pecol. I lived here as a child, and to me it is still the heart of the valley.

Fornesighe

One of the most beautiful villages in the valley, on the Col Dur, a sunny slope above the valley floor. Old tabià barns, narrow lanes and, on carnival Sunday, the procession with the Gnaga. Best to leave the car at the edge of the village.

Zoldo Alto: the upper valley

Fusine

Seat of the municipality of Val di Zoldo. The name comes from “fucina”, forge.

Mareson and Pecol

These two villages in the upper valley are the best base for a holiday. Pecol (1,388 m) is the winter sports resort with lifts into the Civetta ski area. In summer many hikes start here. From Mareson and Pecol you see Monte Pelmo in all its size.

Coi

One of the highest villages in the Zoldo, at about 1,500 metres on a sunny slope above Mareson. Old tabià barns, a small church and a view of the enchanting mountains of the Zoldo you will not forget.

Palafavera

Not a village but a plateau between Pelmo and Civetta, with a cross-country centre, campsite and chairlift. From here the road climbs to Passo Staulanza.

More villages and hamlets

The valley is made up of dozens of small villages and hamlets, many of them just a few houses. They include Astragal, Bragarezza, Brusadaz, Campo, Casal, Cella, Costa, Cornigian, Foppa, Gavaz, Iral, Molin, Pianaz, Pralongo, Sommariva, Soramaè, Sottorogno, Villa. Pralongo still has a historic forge. The best way to discover them is on foot, along the old paths from village to village.

Neighbours

Zoppè di Cadore is a small separate municipality at the foot of Pelmo, but belongs to the Zoldo area. Above the high altar of the church of Sant’Anna hangs an altarpiece attributed to Titian or his workshop. Passo Duran leads to Agordo, Passo Staulanza to Val Fiorentina and Selva di Cadore.

Where to stay

For hikers and skiers the upper valley around Pecol and Mareson is the first choice. If you prefer peace and culture, stay in the lower valley near Forno di Zoldo or in a converted tabià in one of the small villages.
